Il Duomo di Firenze

Santa Maria del Fiore, Firenzen tuomiokirkko, mitä näitä nyt on. Firenzen varmasti tunnetuin maamerkki Ponte Vecchion ohella, Duomo on kyllä aina yhtä vaikuttava. Matkamme ensimmäisenä päivänä, edellisen illan lennoista ja yöllisistä tervetuliasviineistä toivuttuamme, suuntasimme myöhäisen aamupalan jälkeen kirjaimellisesti "isolle kirkolle". Sää ei olisi voinut olla suotuisampi, ja lokakuisena torstaina ennen puoltapäivää turistien määräkin oli siedettävä. * * * * * Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence Cathedral - you know what I'm talking about. Probably the most famous landmark in Florence along with Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo impresses me every time. On the first day of our trip, having recovered from last night's flights and welcome wines, we headed to this beautiful Gothic masterpiece straight from a somewhat late breakfast. The weather couldn't have been better, and being an October Thursday morning, the amount of tourists was quite tolerable.

Selfie stickejä kaupittelevia miehiä väistellen kiersimme puoliksi pestyn kirkon ensin ulkopuolelta, mutta koska halusimme lisäksi nähdä paitsi sisätilat, myös kiivetä korkealle ylös kupoliin, liityimme pohjoispuolelta löytämämme jonon jatkoksi. Vasta ovelle ehdittyämme huomasimme kyltin, jonka mukaan lipunmyynti sijaitsee toisaalla. Lipunmyyntitoimisto löytyi kuin löytyikin parin mutkan kautta: hyvin maastoutuneiden nuolien avulla paikansimme sen hyvin maastoutuneen sisäänkäynnin Duomon portailta katsoen viistosti etuoikealta terassien välistä, pankkikonttorin vierestä. 10 eurolla (ei opiskelija-alennuksia, toim.huom.) saa lipun (OPA Pass), joka avaa ovet piazzojen Duomo & San Giovanni kaikkiin viiteen nähtävyyteen: Duomon kupoliin, Giotton kellotorniin (campanile), "Katedraalimuseoon" (Museo dell'Opera del Duomo), pronssioviseen kastekappeliin (Battistero di San Giovanni) sekä nykyisen katedraalin alla sijaitsevaan Santa Reparataan, muinaisen katedraalin jäänteisiin. Lippu on voimassa 24 tuntia, ajanlasku alkaa ensimmäisestä sisäänleimauksesta. Sanoisin, että 10 eurolle saa kyllä vastinetta, sillä nähtävää riittää, ja 24 tunnissa ehtii vaikkapa parikin kertaa kiipeämään Firenzen kattojen ylle todistamaan sekä auringonlaskua että -nousua. * * * * * We walked around the partly cleaned church avoiding eager selfie stick merchants, but since we also wanted to not only see the inside, but climb up to the cupola as well, we joined a queue we found on the northern side of the cathedral. It was only until we reached the doors that we noticed that there was no ticket booth. So, after a couple of well-camouflaged signs we found the well-camouflaged entrance to the ticket office (looking from the Duomo's steps: to the right from the Baptistery, next to the bank). With 10 euros (no student discounts) you get an OPA Pass, which opens doors to all of the five monuments of piazzas Duomo & San Giovanni: Brunelleschi's Dome (the cupola), Giotto's Bell Tower (campanile), the Cathedral Museum (Museo dell'Opera del Duomo), the bronze-doored Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) and Santa Reparata, the remains of the previous cathedral underneath the present-day cathedral. The ticket is valid for 24 hours, starting from the first time you go in. I say it's 10 euros well spent - there's lots to see, and within the 24 hours you can re-enter as many times as you wish. Maybe climb up to see both sunrise and sunset?

Pääsy sisään kirkkoon on ilmainen, sisäänkäynti löytyy edestä katsottuna portaiden vasemmalta puolelta. Komea Duomo on myös sisältä, mutta ei ehkä niin suurieleinen kuin mitä ulkokuori antaa odottaa. Kupolin fresko on kuitenkin näyttävä, ja sitä pääsee tutkimaan lähemmin (likaisen muoviseinän läpi) matkalla ylös kupoliin. Bongasin tietysti myös hepat! * * * * * Unlike the sights covered by the OPA Pass, entrance to the church itself is free (go in from the left hand side of the steps). Though beautiful, the interior isn't as grand as the outside. The cupola's fresco is impressive, however, and if you dare to climb the steps, you can examine it more closely (through a dirty plastic screen) on the way to the top. (And, wherever there are horses, I seem to find them.)

Kupoliin nousu (sisäänkäynti Duomon pohjoispuolella) ei olekaan sitten ihan heikkojalkaisten tai -sydämisten tai ahtaanpaikankammoisten juttu. Ei tullut otettua aikaa, mutta nousu ainakin tuntui kestävän ainakin 20min, josta osa kului tiukempaakin tiukemmissa kierreportaissa odottaen vastaantulevaa liikennettä. Happi oli välillä vähissä, ja mitä ylemmäs pääsimme, sitä enemmän saimme väistellä vastaantulijoita seiniin liiskautumalla. Onneksi pahimmat kesähelteet olivat jo ohi... Lopulta, kuten odottaa saattoi, maisemat olivat nousun arvoiset. Ja tulihan siinä kulutettua parit tulevat pastat. * * * * * The climb up to the tower (entrance is located on the north side of the Duomo) is not for the weakest, or those with a serious claustrophobia. We didn't take time, but the ascent at least felt like 20 minutes or more, with one 5-10-minute stop in a very confined space to give way to the oncoming people. Thankfully the hottest summer days were long gone by then... In the end though, as one would expect, the view was definitely worth it.

24 tunnin lippu on erittäin kätevä, jos haluaa kiivetä pari kertaa - toisella kerralla kellotorniin, niin näkee itse kupolin! Me emme käyttäneet korttia kuin kupolin sisäänpääsyyn: museo (jonne pääsee lipunmyyntitiskien vierestä) oli suljettu, kellotorniin emme kiivenneet (vaikka mielessä kyllä kävi), kastekappeli ei tullut mieleen ja Santa Reparatasta emme tietäneetkään - sinne olisin halunnut kyllä mennä. No, ehkä kolmas kerta Firenzessä toden sanoo! Laskeutuminen olikin sitten helpompaa (mitä nyt reisiä ja pohkeita vähän tärisytti), vaikka vastaantulijoita sai taas väistellä. Jännä juttu. * * * * * The 24-hour ticket is especially handy, if you want to climb up to the Bell Tower too to see the cupola - it gives your legs enough time to recover. We didn't use the ticket for anything else than the cupola: the museum (which you can enter from the ticket office) was closed, the Bell Tower was left unclimbed (although we did consider it), the Baptistery we somehow skipped, and we didn't even know about Santa Reparata - I would've liked to go there. Well, maybe third time in Florence is the charm! The descent was more pleasant (nevermind our shaky legs), although the two-way traffic did cause some jams on the way down too. Funny, that.
