A Day in Oslo

(Ensimmäisestä) orientaatioviikosta on kulunut nyt puolet. On ollut norjan kielen pikakursseja (vaihda ruotsin a:t e:ksi, niin olet jo pitkällä), tutustumista sekä ihmisiin että yliopistoon, sekä tietysti liuta infotilaisuuksia niin soluasumisesta, henkilötunnuksen hankkimisesta kuin oikeasta ruokavaliostakin. Eilen pääsimmekin sitten yliopiston piikkiin päiväksi Osloon, joka sijaitsee vajaan tunnin (puolisen tuntia ilman pysähdyksiä) bussimatkan päässä Åsista. * * * * * * * The (first) orientation week is already halfway through. There've been crash courses to Norwegian language (just change the a's in Swedish to e's, and you'll be just about fine), we've gotten to know each other and the university, and of course there've been many lectures i.e. about living in a shared flat and getting a Norwegian ID#, even about the right kind of food you need in the autumn and winter to survive the darkness. And yesterday we spent a day in Oslo, the capital of Norway - the university covered our transportation costs and gave everyone a 24-hour Oslo Pass, which gives a free entrance to (almost?) all museums and also to the public transport. It takes under an hour to get there from Ås, about half an hour without stops.

Kävimme Nobel Peace Centerissä; matkustimme lautalla Bygdøylle tutkailemaan viikinkilaivoja, Kansanmuseoon rannikolta siirrettyjä 400 vuotta vanhoja maataloja sekä upeaa sauvakirkkoa; otimme päiväunet Vigelandsanleggetissä alastomien ihmispatsaiden vartioidessa; nousimme ihastelemaan Holmenkollenilta avautuvaa upeaa näkymää (ja löysin myös tulevan naapurustoni vehreiltä rinteiltä - lottovoittoa odotellessa!); söimme falafelit, koska muuhun ei ollut varaa; ja myöhästyttyämme bussista kävimme vielä nauttimassa Oslon upean oopperatalon kattonäkymistä. * * * * * * * We went to the Nobel Peace Center; took a ferry to Bygdøy to see some Viking ships, Folk Museum's 400-year-old peasant houses that have been transported from the coast, plus a gorgeous stave church; took a nap at Vigelandsanlegget under the watchful eye of an army of naked human statues; travelled all the way up to Holmenkollen for an amazing view over the city (and I also found my future neighbourhood in the hills - just waiting for that lottery win to happen!); ate some falafels 'cause everything else was so expensive; and after we missed the bus we went up to the roof of the Oslo Opera House to enjoy the harbour view in moonlight.
