Tower to Westminster: The Queen's Walk

Marraskuisessa Lontoossa ei satanutkaan läheskään niin paljoa, kuin etukäteen pelkäsin - sää oli kaikki 5 päivää vähintäänkin siedettävä. Torstaina heti saavuttuani ja vietyäni laukkuni ystäväni itälontoolaiseen huoneeseen, hyppäsimme takaisin metroon ja otimme suunnaksemme Tower Hillin nähdäksemme kuuluisan Tower Bridgen. Päädyimmekin lopulta kävelemään Thamesin etelärannan kosteita katuja pitkin aina Westminster Bridgelle (eli London Eyelle ja Big Benille) asti. Ja pidemmällekin, mutta siitä lisää myöhemmin. * * * * * * * London wasn't as rainy as I had anticipated, when I visited the city last November - the weather was actually quite tolerable the whole 5 days. I arrived at Heathrow around noon on a Thursday, and as soon I had my bags safely at my friend's room in Bethnal Green, East London, we took the tube to Tower Hill. We wanted to see the Tower Bridge, but actually ended up walking the somewhat wet paths along Thames' South Bank all the way up to Westminster Bridge (that is, to the London Eye and Big Ben). And beyond, but let's leave that for later.

Tower of London. UNESCOn perintökohde, aikojen saatossa niin kuninkaallisena palatsina kuin vankilanakin toiminut linna lienee nykyään parhaiten tunnettu Britannian kruununjalokivien säilytyspaikkana. Sen vallihautaan "istutettiin" 888 246 keraamista unikkoa Remembrance Dayn ja 100 vuotta sitten alkaneessa ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa kaatuneiden britti- ja kansainyhteisön sotilaiden kunniaksi. Muistopäivää vietetään 11.11. sodan päättymispäivän mukaisesti, tosin toisesta maailmansodasta lähtien päivä on ymmärtääkseni toiminut myös yleisenä veteraanien ja kaatuneiden muistopäivänä Britanniassa ja muissa Kansainyhteisön maissa. Viimeisiä unikkoja oltiin juuri keräämässä pois, kun kävelimme ohi. * * * * * * * Tower of London. A UNESCO World Heritage Site that has housed both royals and prisoners in its time, is nowadays probably best known as the home of the Crown Jewels. Its moat was "planted" with 888,246 ceramic poppies representing the 888,246 British and Commonwealth soldiers who fell in the First World War. The Remembrance Day is 11.11. which is the day the 1st World War ended and has, I believe, been a memorial day for all fallen British and Commonwealth soldiers ever since the Second World War. The last of the poppies were being removed as we walked by.

Tower Bridgen yläkäytävissä on nykyään lasiset lattiat, ja epäilemättä komeat näkymät niin alas kuin sivuillekin. Sillan torneissa on mahdollista päästä katsomaan myös taidenäyttelyitä sekä historiallisia konehuoneita. Ja onpahan sillalla mahdollista järjestää vaikkapa häät niin halutessaan! * * * * * * * The glass floors at the Tower Bridge's upper walkways undoubtedly offer some great views both to the sides and straight down. The bridge's towers house art exhibitions and historical engine rooms, and it's even possible to have a wedding there, provided you've got the coin!

Lontoossa on monia erikoisen muotoisia rakennuksia, joista tunnetuimpiin kuuluvat mm. ylemmissä kuvissa vilahtanut The Shard, "(Lasin)sirpale", joka on tällä hetkellä EU:n korkein rakennus, sekä ylläolevassa kuvassa vasemmalta oikealle näkyvät Walkie-Talkie ("Radiopuhelin"), Cheesegrater ("Juustoraastin") ja Gherkin ("Suolakurkku"). Viimeisin tosin näyttää omaan silmääni ehkä enemmän Fabergén munalta kuin kurkulta. * * * * * * * London has a few oddly shaped buildings, of which some of the most known are The Shard, the tallest habitable building in the EU, which you can see in some of the photos above, and the three you can see on the picture right above. They are, from left to right, The Walkie-Talkie, The Cheesegrater and The Gherkin. Though the last one reminds me more of a Fabergé egg than a gherkin.

Queen's Walkin varrella on useita mielenkiintoisia, varmasti vierailun arvoisia kohteita, kuten museolaiva HMS Belfast, ilmainen (vaihtuvia näyttelyitä lukuunottamatta) ja maailman suosituin nykytaiteen museo Tate Modern sekä Shakespearen alkuperäisen Globe-teatterin rekonstruktio. Myös näkymät Thamesin pohjoispuolelle ovat upeat, eivätkä vähiten komean St Paulin katedraalin ansiosta. Matkani aikaan ensi-iltaan tullutta Paddington-elokuvaa mainostettiin ympäri kaupunkia sirotelluilla, eri tavoin koristelluilla Paddington-patsailla. Yksi oli luonnollisesti myös Paddingtonin juna-asemalla, josta en saapuessani tosin ottanut kuvaa. * * * * * * * There are several points of interest along the Queen's Walk, which I firmly believe are worth visiting: the museum ship HMS Belfast, the free (except for temporary exhibitions) and the world's most visited modern art gallery/museum Tate Modern, and the reconstruction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. And the views to the northern side of Thames aren't bad either, with the impressive St Paul's Cathedral in the background. The film Paddington was released during my stay in the city, and they were promoting it with several, differently painted Paddington statues scattered around the city. One being obviously at the Paddington Train Station, though I failed to take a picture of it at my arrival.

Marraskuusta tammikuun alkuun etelärannalla järjestetään joulumarkkinat sekä laajemmat talvifestivaalit, jolloin kävelykadun varrelta löytyy lukemattomia kojuja sekä puuhaa etenkin lapsille. Näistä lisää kuvia hieman myöhemmin! Waterloo Bridgen alla on käytettyjen kirjojen aarreaitta, Southbank Book Market. Ympärivuotisesti ulkoilmassa toimivasta kirja-antikvariaatista voit löytää jotain täysin erilaista! Suosittelen lämpimästi, jos vanhat kirjat ovat yhtään sinun juttusi. Melkein kannoin kotiin 1980-luvulla painetun, Etelä-Englannin kukkalajeista kertovan tietokirjan. * * * * * * * From November to the beginning of January there's the Southbank Christmas Market (and a broader Winter Festival), during which there are numerous stalls selling arts and crafts and food, and lots of activities especially for children. You'll see some photos later! And hidden under the Waterloo Bridge is a true gem: the Southbank Book Market. It's open year round, and it has a diverse selection of second-hand books. I definitely recommend checking it out, if you have a penchant for old books. I almost walked away with one about the flowers of Southern England, printed in the 1980s.

In case you didn't know, they are originally characters from a Finnish book series, hugely popular, and very philosophical. Well, some of them, anyway. And in case I haven't mentioned this earlier: here at NMBU the student organisation for those studying plant science is named after a character who's a stamp-collector-turned-botanist: Hemulen!
