A wish list for the next 12 months

Lento Norjaan lähtee parin kuukauden päästä. Paljon asioita on vielä selvittämättä, mutta yritän ensin saada hoidettua alkukesän opiskelut alta pois. Esseen kirjoittamisesta ja tenttiin lukemisesta saa kuitenkin välillä pitää taukoa. Saahan? Helsingin helle saa ajatukset harhailemaan viileämmille seuduille. * * * * * * * I'm flying to Norway in two months' time. There are still many puzzles that need solving, but I'll try and focus on my studies for a few more weeks. It is allowed to take a break from writing essays and studying for exams though. Isn't it? The current heat in Helsinki makes one's thoughts wander off to cooler regions.

En ole koskaan ollut rantalomaihmisiä, pidän enemmän kaupunkimatkoista ja paikalliseen kulttuuriin ja ihmisiin tutustumisesta. Vaikka olen usein aika mukavuudenhaluinen, on paras matkakohde mielestäni sellainen, jossa on mahdollisuus nähdä eläimiä, joita ei ole koskaan ennen nähnyt, sekä maisemia, joita ei arkena näe. Upeita vuoria voi toki katsella tinkimättä mukavuudestaan, mutta mieluummin patikoin päivän päästäkseni sinne, mihin ihan jokainen turisti ei lähde. Norjasta on loistavat lentoyhteydet Pohjois-Eurooppaan ja pidemmälle. Lentokone on ymmärtääkseni myös Norjan sisäisillä matkoilla hyvin suosittu kulkuväline hitaiden teiden vuoksi. Norjan luonnon kauneus on maailmankuulua, mutta upeita, karuja maisemia tarjoavat myös pohjoisten merien saariryhmät. Alla muutamia paikkoja, joissa aion käydä budjetin niin salliessa! * * * * * * * I've never been into beach holidays, I'd rather explore cities and local cultures. Though I like to maintain a certain level of personal hygiene and enjoy a cosy bed at night, the best travel destination for me is one where I can spot animals I've never seen before and take in views I don't witness in my everyday life. I'm not saying you can't marvel at gorgeous mountains from a jacuzzi, but I like to challenge myself, go off the beaten path (both literally and figuratively) and experience something not many will. Norway has excellent flight connections to Northern Europe and beyond. Plane, as I understand, is a common means of domestic transportation in Norway what with the road connections being quite slow at times. The beauty of Norwegian nature is famous worldwide, but the archipelagos in the Atlantic and the Arctic Sea offer some unique landscapes of their own. Here are some of the places I'll visit, if my budget so allows!

Sea birds and rugged cliffs! GRÖNLANTI / GREENLAND Toinen Tanskan itsehallintoalue, maailman suurin saari. 57 000 ihmistä, paljon jäätä. Toistaiseksi. Another one of Denmark's autonomous areas, world's largest island. 57,000 people, lots of ice. For now. HUIPPUVUORET / SVALBARD Jääkarhuja ja venäläisiä kaivosmiehiä. Polar bears and Russian miners.

"SAARNATUOLI" / PREIKESTOLEN Näitkö kuvan? You saw the photo, right? LOFOOTIT / LOFOTEN Pohjois-Norjan upean saariryhmän kalastajakylät vetävät puoleensa, ja vuoret ovat heikkouteni. This handsome archipelago in the Northen Norway has some cute fishing villages. Plus, I have a sweet spot for mountains. JOTUNHEIMEN / JOTUNHEIMEN NATIONAL PARK Ja muut kansallispuistot, kuten Hardangervidda. Sisäistä nörttiäni kiehtoo Jotunheimen jo nimensä puolesta, ja alueella myös sijaitsee Pohjois-Euroopan korkein vuori, Galdhøppigen. And all the other national parks, such as Hardangervidda. The nerd in me is fascinated by Jotunheimen's name, and the area is home to Northern Europe's highest peak, Galdhøppigen.

Tarkoituksenani olisi tehdä myös jonkinasteinen roadtrip ja/tai kulkea ainakin osa Hurtigrutenin reitistä, Norjan rannikko ja sen kaupungit ja kylät ovat käsittämättömän kuvauksellisia. Norjan sekä mainittujen saariryhmien hintataso on kuitenkin sen verran korkea, että tuskin kaikkea tulen näkemään (ja pitää sitä kai opiskellakin jossain välissä), mutta osan näistä toiveista tulen ehdottomasti toteuttamaan! Löytyykö sieltä ruudun toiselta puolelta omakohtaisia kokemuksia mainituista paikoista? Tai suosituksia muista, tässä mainitsemattomista paikoista, jotka kannattaa Norjassa käydessään kokea? * * * * * * * I would also like to do some sort of a road trip and/or travel at least some way down (or up, if you will) the Hurtigruten route. Norway's coastline, cities and villages are so picturesque. Unfortunately the prices both in Norway and the aforementioned archipelagos are so high, that I'm afraid some of these wishes will be left unfilled, at least for now (and I guess there's some studying to do too). But I firmly believe that I'll be visiting most of these places during my stay in Norway! Are there any personal experiences of these places on that side of the screen? Or recommendations on other places that weren't mentioned here and are worth a visit while in Norway?
