NZ 09-10 #1: Auckland & Whangarei

Lentokoneen ikkunasta avautui rauhoittava näkymä kumpuileville, valkoisten täplien valloittamille nurmilaitumille. Kuvittele lampaiden valloittama Hobittila ilman hobitteja, niin ymmärrät mitä tarkoitan. Jotain sen suuntaista osasin odottaakin, mutta tämä ensinäkymä Aotearoasta, pitkän valkean pilven maasta, toi silti sisäisen maalaistyttöni huulille leveän hymyn. Unelmani oli käymässä toteen. * * * * * * * A serene view of green, white-spotted rolling hills opened behind the airplane windows. Picture the Hobbiton, overrun by sheep and without the hobbits, and you know what I mean. I knew to expect something like this, but nevertheless this first glimpse of Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud, made my inner country girl smile ever so widely. My dream was about to come true.

En kuitenkaan astunut koneesta keskelle maalaisidylliä, vaan sateisen harmaalle Aucklandin lentokentälle. Lentokenttäbussi vei lukuisten ylä- ja alamäkien kautta läpi amerikkalaistyylisten pientaloalueiden, päätyen lopulta harmaiden kerrostalojen ja pilvenpiirtäjien hallitsemaan keskustaan. Uuden-Seelannin suurin kaupunki ja kaupallinen keskus ei välttämättä ensisilmäyksellä hurmaa, mutta se ei tarkoita, etteikö tällä miljoonakaupungilla olisi tarjottavaa. * * * * * * * I didn't, however, step out of the plane to idyllic countryside, but to a grey, rainy Auckland Airport. A bus took me through hilly American-style suburbs to the high-rise-filled city centre. New Zealand's largest city and commercial hub might not charm you at first, but that doesn't mean this metropolis has nothing to offer.

Meri ei Aucklandissa ole koskaan kaukana. Keskustasta itään lähtevä Tamaki Drive on komea rantatie, jonka kävelemiseen saa kulutettua puoli päivää (muista aurinkorasva! Uuden-Seelannin UV-indeksi on erittäin korkea). Rannan tuntumassa sijaitsee Rangitoto Island, Aucklandin alueen nuorin tulivuori, jonne kulkee lautta useamman kerran päivässä. Saarella ei käsittääkseni ole pysyvää asutusta, vaan siitä on tehty luonnonsuojelualue, ja se on hyvin suosittu päiväretkikohde. Tamaki Drivella sijaitsee Kelly Tarlton's, akvaariomaailma, jossa voi bongata paitsi rauskuja ja hassuja kaloja, myös runsaslukuisen valkokulma- ja kuningaspingviinien lauman. Näitä tyylikkäitä lintuja pääsee seuraamaan punaisen snowcatin suojista, joka kiertää lintujen asuinaluetta verkkaiseen tahtiin. Rakennuksessa on myös erittäin mielenkiintoinen kapteeni Robert Falcon Sottin Etelämanner-matkoista kertova museotyylinen Scott Base. Suosittelen ehdottomasti vierailua Tarltonin Kellyn akvaarioon! Aucklandin keskustan eteläpuolelta löytyy persoonallisia kauppakatuja, Sky Toweriin kannattaa nousta ihastelemaan näköalaa, kaupungissa järjestetään säännöllisesti maailmanluokan konsertteja, ja maan kansallislaji rugbya kannattaa ehdottomasti katsoa - jos ei livenä, niin ainakin paikallisten kanssa baarissa. Maan ylpeys, All Blacks, on voittanut rugbyn maailmancupin lukuisia kertoja, minkä kyllä kaupunkikuvastakin huomaa. Joukkueella on (tai ainakin oli) Aucklandin pääkadulla oma fanitavarakauppansa. * * * * * * * The ocean is never far away in Auckland. From the centre to the east leads Tamaki Drive, a scenic road along which you can spend an afternoon, just walking and taking in the view (don't forget your sunscreen though, NZ has one of the highest UV-indexes in the world). In the distance you can see Rangitoto Island, Auckland's youngest volcano and a scenic reserve which is a popular tourist destination. You can reach the island via ferry, there are multiple departures daily from the city harbour. Tamaki Drive hosts Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium. Besides all the weird and funny fish there are penguins! You can take a Snowcat ride to see the King and Gentoo penguins going about their daily businesses, munching on some fish straight from their caretaker's hand. There's also Scott Base, a museum-style area where you can see e.g. what kind of equipment Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his men used while exploring the Antarctic. I definitely recommend visiting Kelly Tarlton's if it's at all your cup of tea! If you go a bit south from the city centre you'll find some interesting cafes and shops, and obviously there's a lot of shopping to do in the heart of the city too. You should check out the view from the Sky Tower, the city hosts big concerts regularly, and one must-see is a rugby game. Whether you go to the stadium or watch it from a flat screen with the locals, don't miss it. It's the national sport of New Zealand, and the All Blacks, the national team, has won the World Cup more times than one can remember. It's their pride and joy, and they even have (or at least, had) an All Blacks store on Auckland's main street, the Queen Street.

Alkuperäinen suunnitelmani oli olla reissussa 4kk ja tehdä ihan oikeita töitäkin jossain vaiheessa, minkä vuoksi matkustin Uuteen-Seelantiin Working Holiday -viisumilla enkä turistiviisumilla. Pian maahan saapumisen jälkeen totesin kuitenkin, että paperityö ja veroprosentti n. 1kk työrupeaman takia oli liikaa, joten aikaistin paluulentoani kuukaudella, jätin työnhaun sikseen ja päätin seikkailla 3 kuukautta sydämeni kyllyydestä. Aucklandista suuntasin ensimmäisenä pohjoiseen, Whangarein kautta Paihiaan. Whangareista löytyy jonkinasteinen näyttävä vesiputous, mutta kuulin siitä vasta jälkeenpäin, joten en löytänyt juuri muuta nähtävää kuin yhden puiston sekä kaupungin laitamilla sijaitsevan Kiwi Housen. Öisin liikkuvaa lentokyvytöntä lintua on vaikea nähdä luonnossa, joten ympäri maata sijaitsee kiivitaloja, joissa päivärytmi on heittänyt häränpyllyä ja näin ollen keskipäivällä voi astua sisään pimeään huoneeseen ja nähdä tuon mystisen linnun. Parin tunnin istumisesta huolimatta en kuitenkaan lintua bongannut, mutta onneksi Kiwi North Heritage Parkin tiluksilla laiduntava utelias lehmä pelasti päivän. Kannattaa muuten tarkistaa paikallisliikenteen aikataulut, jos alueelle on luvattu sadetta etkä ottanut sontikkaa mukaan ja olet lähdössä pois vasta puiston sulkemisaikaan. Busseja ei kulje ihan vartin välein. * * * * * * * My original plan was to travel for 4 months and do some actual work while in NZ, which is why I went there with a Working Holiday visa instead of a tourist visa. Soon after landing though I thought it would be too much of a hassle to get all the paperwork and job hunting done just to get a job for one month. I decided to leave about a month earlier, forget about the work and explore the country to my heart's content for the next three months. From Auckland I headed north, through Whangarei to Paihia. I heard about the Whangarei Falls only after my visit, so there wasn't much to see in Whangarei apart from a nice park and a Heritage Park with a Kiwi House. The flightless, nocturne bird is hard to see in the wild, so there are several "kiwi houses" in NZ that offer the public a chance to see the mysterious bird during the day. The daily rhythm of these houses has been turned upside down, so when you enter this dark room in the day, you have a chance to see the bird hunting and doing who knows what "at night". I had no such luck though. I sat there for two hours and didn't even get a glimpse of the bird. Well, at least there was a cute, curious cow who saved my day. And by the way, I recommend you look up the bus timetables in advance. Especially if you're leaving the park near the closing time, it's pouring rain and you don't have an umbrella. The buses don't run every fifteen minutes.
