NZ 09-10 #5: Milford Sound

Milford Sound lienee Uuden-Seelannin suosituin nähtävyys, ja se rankattiin vuonna 2008 yhdeksi maailman ykkösturistikohteista. Eteläsaaren lounaisosan Fiordland National Parkin vuonoissa riittää nähtävää, mutta Milfordin lähes pystysuorat seinämät ja Mitre Peakin terävä huippu ovat tehneet siitä suosituimman. En kyllä ihmettele. Jo pelkkä ajomatka Te Anausta sinne on elämys. * * * * * * * Milford Sound must be the most famous tourist destination in New Zealand. In 2008 it was said to be the world's top travel destination, according to the 2008 Travelers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor. There's lots to see in Fiordland National Park in the south west corner of South Island, but I think the almost vertical cliffs and the pointy top of Mitre Peak are the reasons behind Milford Sound's fame. And it's no wonder. Even the journey from Te Anau is incredible.

  

Jutut tuulilasien tiivisteitä syövistä linnuista ovat ihan tosia. Keat ovat uteliaita, röyhkeitäkin, ja niitä löytää vuoristojen pysähdyspaikoilta. Tämä yksilö kavereineen hengasi yksisuuntaisen Homer-tunnelin suulla, jossa autoilijat odottivat ajovuoroaan. Maan- ja lumivyöryt eivät ole alueella harvinaisia, ja "ruuhka-aikojen" ulkopuolella tunnelissa ei käytetä liikennevaloja, vaan liikenne on kaksisuuntaista, jotta turhaa odottamista riskialueilla olisi mahdollisimman vähän. * * * * * * * The stories about birds eating all the rubbery car parts are true. Keas are curious and cheeky little creatures that you can see at mountainous lay-bys. This one and its friends were hanging around near the other end of the oneway Homer tunnel while travellers were waiting for their turn to use the tunnel. Landslides and avalanches are not uncommon in the area, so outside peak hours there are no traffic lights in use to avoid unnecessary waiting at the risky areas.

Siinä hieman mittakaavaa. To put things in perspective.

Jos on millä mällätä, niin vuonoa pääsee katselemaan myös yläilmoista. Vaellusreittejäkin alueelta löytyy, mutta ylivoimaisesti suosituin tapa on saapua pieneen satamaan omalla autolla tai bussilla ja hypätä sitten pariksi tunniksi lauttaan. Reissuun menee koko päivä aamuvarhaisesta iltamyöhään, jos ja kun lähtee matkaan Te Anausta. Mutta on se sen arvoista. * * * * * * * If you've got some extra cash, you'll be able to fly over the sound. There are also some hiking trails in the area, but the most popular way to get to Milford Sound is to arrive there by car or bus and then take a passenger ferry for a couple of hours. If and when you're based in Te Anau, it takes a whole day (from dusk till dawn). But it sure is worth it.

Te Anausta pääsee hyvin muillekin vuonoille. Kävin katsastamassa myös Doubtful Soundin. Ei yhtä jyrkkiä seinämiä, mutta alueena isompi ja aivan yhtä kaunis kuin kuuluisampi kaverinsa. Osa matkasta on suoritettava veneellä, eli omin avuin sinne on melko hankala lähteä. Kamerasta loppui akku heti alkumatkasta, enkä ollut muistanut ottaa varapattereita mukaan. Te Anaun jälkeen suuntasin uudeksivuodeksi Queenstowniin. Kaunis kaupunki Remarkables-vuorten juurella, kuuluisa laajasta aktiviteettitarjonnastaan - tänne suuntaavat kaikki hurjapäät. Se näkyi, niin hostellin asukkaissa kuin katukuvassakin. Kun vuosi oli vaihtunut, hyppäsin taas bussiin ja vietin kokonaisen päivän tien päällä Mt Cookin kautta Christchurchiin. Bussi siis pysähtyi pariksi tunniksi Mt Cookin lähellä sijaitsevaan hotelli-museokompleksiin, josta olisi hyvällä säällä nähnyt tuon maan korkeimman vuoren, mutta sadekeli ja runsas pilviverho peittivät valitettavasti näkyvyyden. En tiedä miksi, mutta minulla ei ole yhtäkään kuvaa Queenstownista tai Mt Cookilta. Liekö ollut reissuväsymystä, tai sitten olen vain tyytynyt ihastelemaan maisemia ja tapahtumia omin silmin eikä linssin kautta. Alla nyt kuitenkin vielä pari kuvaa Te Anausta. * * * * * * * Te Anau is a great base for exploring other sounds and fjords too - I chose Doubtful Sound. The cliffs weren't as steep, but the area was wider and just as beautiful as Milford. En route you need a boat, so it's not easily accessible by yourself. My camera's battery died early, and I had forgotten to take extra batteries with me, so no photos this time. For New Year's I headed to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand. Beautiful city next to the Remarkables, very popular among the adrenaline junkies. And that showed, not only in the hostel but on the streets too. Once the year had changed I hopped on a bus again, this time back to Christchurch via Mt Cook. It took a whole day and included a couple of hours' stop near Mt Cook at big hotel-boutique-museum thingy. Had the weather been nicer, one would've been able to actually see Mt Cook, the highest mountain in NZ, but no such luck for me. I don't know why, but I don't have a single photo of Queenstown or Mt Cook or anything in between. Maybe due to a slight travel fatigue, or maybe I just admired the view and all the happenings with my own eyes instead of through a lens. So here's two photos of Te Anau instead.
