Korkeasaari, a.k.a. Helsinki Zoo

Sain viime lauantaina kaipaamani hengähdystauon matkavalmisteluista, kun Helsinkiä viikkoja peittäneet pilvet tekivät lauantaina vihdoin tilaa auringolle, olkoonkin että vain päiväksi. Koko kaupunki tuntui olevan harvinaisen sääilmiön ansiosta liikkeellä, Korkeasaareenkin sain ehkä ensimmäistä kertaa elämässäni oikeasti jonottaa. Itse saarella väki kuitenkin hajaantui, eikä ahtaanpaikankammoa tullut muualla kuin Amazonian käytävillä. * * * * * * * Last Saturday I got to take a much needed break from all the travel preparations when the clouds that had been surrounding Helsinki for the last couple of weeks finally gave way to the sun, even if only for a day. The whole city seemed to be on the move thanks to the sun, and perhaps for the first time in my life I actually had to queue to buy a ticket to the Helsinki Zoo (Korkeasaari means, somewhat accurately translated, "High Island").

As the name suggests, Korkeasaari is an island. It was established way back in 1889, which makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world, and one of the few situated on an island. It offers great views to every direction, and you can see the Helsinki Cathedral and Uspenski Cathedral from the lookout tower. You can get to the island either by ferry or bus, or in my case, by car and a short walk. I do suggest you take the ferry for a chance to see Helsinki from the sea. There are restaurants and cafés at the zoo, but you can also take your own basket and have a picnic with a view over Helsinki. There are even barbecue grills available for use free of charge!

Arvostan! * * * * * * * All of the restaurants and cafés only use biodegradable single-use foodservice products, and as much as possible of the food selection is either locally produced, organic or Fair Trade (or a combination of these). Excellent!

Pari viikkoa sitten eläintarhassa järjestettiin Art Meets Sand, hiekanveiston SM-kilpailut, jonka tulokset ovat vielä toistaiseksi ihasteltavissa Karhulinnan lähellä. * * * * * * * A couple of weeks ago there was Art Meets Sand, Finnish Championships of sand sculpting. The results are there to be admired, for now, close to the bear enclosure.

Korkeasaari on auki ympäri vuoden, ja syyskuussa on taas 5. ja 12.9. vuorossa Kissojen yö! En ole vielä kertaakaan käynyt saarella kesäkauden ulkopuolella, mutta haluaisin ehdottomasti kokea eläintarhassa kaikki neljä vuodenaikaa :) * * * * * * * Korkeasaari is open year round, and there's going to be "Night of the Cats" on two separate Fridays, 5th and 12th of September. The zoo will be open from 16 to 24 (4pm to 12am), there will be live music and a great opportunity to see the big cats when they're most active. And there are cubs too, the snow leopards and lions have new babies!
