Iconic views

Onko klassisempaa turistitekemistä New Yorkissa kuin kaupungin siluetin ihailu yllä kattojen? Tuskinpa. Perinteikkäintä olisi varmasti nousta Empire State Buildingiin Meg Ryanin ja Tom Hanksin jalanjäljillä, mutta koska tuo pytinki on itsessään ihan komea, päätin (monien suositusten saattelemana) kiivetä mieluummin Rockefeller Centerin huipulle Top of the Rockiin. Tai no, ketä mä huijaan. Hissiä käytin. * * * * * * * Is there anything more traditional for a tourist to do in NYC than admire the city's silhouette over the rooftops? I think not. The most iconic place to do this would probably be the Empire State Building, following in the footsteps of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, but since the building is quite handsome itself, I decided to climb on Top of the Rock(efeller Center) instead. Oh, but who am I kidding. I took the elevator.

Maisemia ei kuitenkaan ihan noin vain marssita katselemaan, ainakaan perjantaina iltapäivästä. Olisikohan kello ollut kahden-kolmen paikkeilla, kun kävin ostamassa lipun (euroissa reilut parikymppiä), ja seuraava vapaa aika oli vähän viiden jälkeen. Auringonlasku oli puoli seitsemän aikoihin, joten ajat klo 18 ympärillä olivat jo täynnä. Lippuun on merkittynä vartin aikaikkuna, jolloin paikalle kuuluu ilmestyä, mutta jos siitä myöhästyy, käynnin voi ilmeisesti vaihtaa myöhäisempään ajankohtaan. Minulla oli siis reilut pari tuntia aikaa tapettavana, joten päätin jättimäisen (jenkkien käsitys mediumista on vähän eri kuin suomalaisten - pitäkää tämä mielessä tilatessanne mitä tahansa ruokaa tai juomaa...) smoothien voimin talsia Avenue of the Americasin, tutummin Sixth Avenuen, kolossaalisten pilvenpiirtäjien ohi pohjoiseen kohti Central Parkia. Pieni huomio muuten: New Yorkissa ei tarvitse odottaa vihreää (tai valkoista) valoa, vaan jalankulkija saa ihan luvan kanssa ylittää tien jos autoja ei tule, vaikka valo olisi punaisella. Tämä johtaa paitsi jännittäviin kyttäys-spurtti-komboihin, myös siihen, että osa jengistä ei välitä vaikka autoja tulisikin, mikä puolestaan saa sekä autoilijat että jalankulkijat näyttämään ne sivistyneemmät puolet itsestään. * * * * * * * You don't just waltz in to check out the sights though, at least not on a Friday afternoon. I think it was around 2 pm when I went to buy a ticket, and the next available time was just after 5 pm. Sunset was around 6:30 pm, so all the times around 6 were full. They give you a 15-minute window of time during which you're supposed to enter the building, but should you miss it, they'll schedule you with a new time. So, I had a bit over 2 hours to kill, so I decided to head north along the Sixth Ave to Central Park with a massive smoothie in my hand - "medium" my a***, more like extra large. Everything really is bigger in America. By the way: you don't need to wait for the green (or white) light to cross the road if there are no cars approaching. This creates some intense look-and-dash moments, but also leads to some people ignoring the approaching cars completely, which then brings out the best in both the drivers and said pedestrians.

Keskuspuisto on massiivinen, 3,41 neliökilometriä. En lähtenyt eteläreunaa pidemmälle - veikkaan, että puistosta löytyisi uusia kulmia ainakin yhden kokonaisen päivän mittaiselle tutkimusretkelle. Valtavan leikkipuiston reunalla, espanjankielisten lastenhoitajien vieressä istuessani, selailin ystäväni lainaksi antamaa The Little Black Book of New Yorkia ja ehdin jo innostua. Siinä mainitaan Sheep Meadow, lammasniitty, mutta eihän siellä enää mitään lampaita ole - viimeisimmät nähtiin vuonna 1934. Puistosta löytyy kuitenkin esim. jääkarhullinen eläintarha, lukuisia lintulajeja sekä lampi täynnä sorsia. Ja saa siellä kalastaakin, tosin saalistaan ei saa pitää. Istuin auringonpaahteessa ehkä 1,5 tuntia ohikulkevia ihmisiä katsellen ja smoothietani tuhoten, taustamusiikkina traagisia rakkauslauluja itsekseen raakkunut bisnesmies, kunnes tuli aika palata kaupungin vilinään. * * * * * * * The Central Park is massive, 3.41 sq. km. I stayed in the southernmost part, but I bet you could spend an entire day in the park and still find new corners after sunset. While sitting close to a gigantic children's playground next to some Spanish-speaking nannies, I read The Little Black Book of New York which my friend lent me, and got excited. The book mentions a Sheep Meadow, but of course there were no fluffy white animals there anymore - the last were seen in 1934. But if it's animals you're after, there's always the Central Park Zoo with its polar bears, there are numerous bird species in the park, and you can also do some fishing, though you must release the fish once you've caught them. I sat in the heat for about 1.5 hours doing some people watching and trying to get rid of my smoothie, while the soundtrack was provided by a businessman "singing" tragic love songs.

Kun sisäänpääsyaikani viimein koitti, nousin portaat yläkertaan astuakseni hissiin. Tai niin luulin. Kannattaa lisätä sellainen 20-30 minuuttia lipussa ilmoitettuun aikaan, niin saat melko totuudenmukaisen ajan sille hetkelle, kun lopulta saavut näköalatasanteelle. Omalla kohdallani jonotus turvatarkastukseen kesti ehkä 10min, minkä jälkeen oli vuorossa katsaus Rockefeller Centerin historiaan (yksi historian kuuluisimmista valokuvista on muuten GE Buildingin rakennusvaiheesta). Lopulta kuitenkin löysin itseni rakennuksen huipulta, ja no, olivathan ne maisemat kyllä kaiken härdellin arvoiset. * * * * * * * When it was finally time, I entered the GE Building and walked up the stairs to step into the elevator. Or so I thought. If you add another 20-30 minutes to the time printed on your ticket, you get a somewhat accurate idea about the moment you'll actually arrive on the Observation Deck. I had to wait like 10 minutes for the security check, and after that there's a briefing on the building's history (Lunch atop a Skyscraper was taken during the construction of the GE Building). But, finally I got there, and yes, the view was worth the hassle.

Oli sinne Empire State Buildingiinkin näköjään kerääntynyt ihan kiitettävästi porukkaa. Näköalatasanteella, kun sinne lopulta pääsee, saa hengata ihan niin kauan kuin huvittaa. Niinpä päätin odottaa auringonlaskua. Alue on kolmessa tasossa - hissi nousee 67. kerrokseen, ylempiin pääsee (rulla)portaita pitkin. Suosittelen ylintä kerrosta, sieltä voi hyvässä lykyssä napata istumapaikan, josta seurata auringonlaskua ilman häiritsevää lasiseinää. Suosittelen myös juttelemaan vartijoiden kanssa! Saatat päästä keskustelemaan esim. Afrikan tilanteesta, tai katseesi saatetaan ohjata Yankee Stadiumille johtavaan valomereen. * * * * * * * There were some people atop the Empire State Building too. Once you get to the Observation Deck, you can stay there for as long as you like. Once I realised this, I decided to wait for the sunset. The Deck is on three levels - the 67th floor is reached by the elevator, the upper two by stairs or escalators. If you're lucky, you can get a seat from which to admire the sunset. And don't hesitate to chat with the guards! You might find yourself discussing the situation in Africa, or your gaze might be guided towards the endless line of cars going to the Yankee Stadium.

Pimeän tultua palautin jalat maahan ja kävin pyörähtämässä Times Squaren nurkilla. Vinkkinä muuten, että metroasemien sisäänkäynnit eivät ainakaan isoimmissa risteyskohdissa ole aina molemminpuoleisia - pidä silmällä sisäänkäyntien suuntakylttejä. T. nimim. Queens ≠ Brooklyn * * * * * * * After dark I put my feet back on the ground and checked out the area around Times Square. Oh, and here's a tip: be aware that there might be different subway entrances on the same "station" for different destinations, at least at the biggest hubs. In other words, if you're heading to Downtown or Brooklyn, don't use the entrance that says Queens, okay?
