People's Climate March 2014 in NYC

New Yorkin reissuni viimeisenä päivänä olin ajatellut kierrellä Brooklynissä, mutta kanssani hostellihuoneen parina yönä jakaneet eläkeläisrouvat antoivatkin vinkin ihan toisenlaisesta aktiviteetista. Olin vilkuillut sängyillä lepääviä iskulausein koristeltuja pahveja, ja jälkimmäisenä yönä sainkin selville, että kyseessä oli kaksi äärimmäisen mukavaa ja asialleen omistautunutta ympäristöaktivistia. Heti esittäytymisten jälkeen sain kuulla varsin kiihkeään sävyyn esitetyn argumentin "Climate change is real, you know. It's not a conspiracy.", eli että "Ilmastonmuutos on totta, ei mikään salaliittoteoria". Tästä voi ehkä vetää jotain johtopäätöksiä Yhdysvalloissa vallitsevasta ilmastokeskustelusta. Vastaukseni "Yeah, I know, I study Environmental Economics", eli että "Tiedän, opiskelen alaa", sai heti kaksikon suunpielet nousemaan, ja saimmekin aikaiseksi varsin mielenkiintoisen keskustelun, joka rönsyili ympäristöasioista Suomen työllisyyteen, opiskelijoiden tilanteeseen ja eläkepolitiikkaan. He kertoivat, että seuraavana päivänä järjestettäisiin People's Climate March, johon liittyvissä työpajoissa he olivatkin jo pari päivää viettäneet, ja aikoivat viettää tulevan sunnuntain marssien. Itse olin ollut täysin tietämätön koko tapahtumasta, mikä hieman nolotti, joten luonnollisesti vaihdoin Brooklyn-kiertelyn jättimielenosoitukseen. P.S. Bongaatko Leonardo DiCaprion?   * * * * * * *   On my last in New York I had planned to see a bit of Brooklyn, but the two elderly ladies sharing the hostel room with me for the last two nights gave a tip of a completely different activity. I had seen the colourful cardboards on their beds the night before, and on the second evening I found out that the ladies were in fact two of the loveliest and most passionate environmental activists I had ever met. Right after the introductions they however went straight to the point: "Climate change is real, you know. It's not a conspiracy." (One could draw some conclusions about the climate discussions in the US from this approach...). I was quick to answer that "Yeah, I know, I study Environmental Economics". This made the two very happy, and we spent the evening in a lively discussion ranging from the environment to Finland's job markets, students' situation and pension policy. They told me that there would be a People's Climate March the next day, for which they had attended a variety of workshops and meetings for the past couple of days. I was a bit ashamed for not having a clue about the happening before, so I changed a Sunday stroll in Brooklyn to a giant demonstration. P.S. En minäkään. Mutta paikalla hän oli, kuten myös mm. Mark Ruffalo ja Edward Norton, puhumattakaan esimerkiksi YK:n pääsihteeri Ban Ki-moonista. Kyseinen mielenosoitushan järjestettiin seuraavalla viikolla New Yorkissa alkaneen YK:n ilmastohuippukokouksen vuoksi - ei protestina, vaan mielipiteenä. YK:n rauhanlähettilääksi valittu DiCaprio piti kyseisen huippukokouksen avauspuheen. Mielenosoituksen arvioitiin vetäneen n. 400 000 marssijaa, mikä teki siitä historian suurimman ilmastomarssin. Ympäri maailmaa pidettiin vastaavia marsseja, esimerkiksi Lontoossa väkeä kerääntyi n. 40 000. Itse en marssinut, sillä en tiennyt yhtään mitä odottaa (tai miten pitkäksi homma venyisi - lento lähti illalla), joten päätin parkkeerata itseni ja kamerani keskuspuiston lounaiskulmaan Columbus Circlelle, josta marssi lähti käyntiin. Ja tulihan niitä kuvia otettua. Kuvien määrä on valtava, mutta enempää en vain kyennyt karsimaan. Siispä seuraavaksi omat suosikkiotokseni, olkaapa hyvät!   * * * * * * *   Me neither. The march was a response to the UN Climate Summit that took place in the same city the following week. The summit's opening speech was delivered by DiCaprio, who was earlier in September appointed as a UN Messenger of Peace. It was estimated that around 400,000 people attended the march in NYC, and thousands more all around the world, for example the London march was attended by about 40,000 people. I didn't march, however, because I had no idea what to expect and how long it would take (I had to catch a flight in the evening), so I stationed myself and my camera at the Columbus Circle in the southwest corner of Central Park. The final count was over 500, and despite my good efforts, I only managed to cut it down to around 70. So here are some of my favourite shots of the event - enjoy!
